My History School Project

Slavery in Colombia was bad for the slaves because they were forced to do what the Conquistadors commanded. For example, in the coast of Colombia, Santa Marta there was a lot of gold dug in the ground so when they brought the African slaves to Colombia, they wanted them to dig up the gold. Cartagena also had gold dug in the ground, and the Conquistadors also went there too. Life in the gold mines was tough because there were long hours, sticky and hot climate, and if the slaves weren’t doing their job they would have been beaten. This shows how slaves were treated and this shows that they really didn’t care about the slaves overall well-being.  Another example is The Atlantic and Pacific coasts had many gold especially Colombia. The people took advantage of the slaves and so they wanted all of them to dig all the gold up. This shows that the people took advantage of these people and wanted them to get gold for them. Colombia was a country that had a lot of gold and could have been a rich country if the Conquistadors didn’t take over their land.

How Slavery ended

In Colombia slaves resisted slavery to escape slavery so they won’t keep getting treated badly. For example Matudere was a community of escaped slaves who lived in an area called The Palenques located on the northern coast of Cartagena. They escaped from mountains, swamps, and other remote locales away from their former masters creating these maroon societies. If the slaves did not escape, they had the opportunity to buy their freedom using gold powder they mined during their free time (https://repository.library.georgetown.edu/bitstream/handle/10822/557698/Herrera_georgetown_0076M_11964.pdf;sequence=1 ). This shows how slaves were resisting slavery and they found ways in how to escape slavery.  Eventually, in 1819 the Independence army fought against the Spanish army in a war called Boyaca. The independence army defeated the Spanish army to finally gain independence.

Culture in Colombia

In Colombia, you can still find African culture in music or dressing forms. For example, La Cumbia is a dance in Colombia and has instruments such as piano, bongo drums, and etc. But the same is true for Brazil. Their dance, la samba, has instruments from Africa and it is the same for Colombia. Some of their instruments such as a Bass drum and a Calling drum come from Africa and are used for music in Colombia. This shows that the influence from Africa can still be found in Colombia today. African culture has influenced Colombian culture as seen in their clothing. Colombian clothing is very similar to African clothing because of the bright colors, the fabric used (cotton), and loose skirts or pants. Another example is Clothing for the music are very familiar to clothing in Africa. Colombians today, still use the clothing and instruments the Africans introduced to the country a long time ago. This shows how much of a influence Africa has on Colombian culture.
